Can I see your license please?

This may be a question (in broken English) that you may be asked by a Japanese police officer at some stage. Do not get caught driving without the valid Japanese drivers license! Apart from the hassle and the time involved trying to explain to an equally bermused and frustrated police officer how you have a license but you can`t find it (even though it is one from back home).
The fact that you run the risk of large fines and possible detention you also must take into account the ramifications of insurance coverage. Your car may be insured but will the insurance pay up if you don`t have a valid Japanese driver`s license? I think that they would see a great chance here not to process any claim. So what to do? Get that license changed over ASAP!
For a run down on the procedure and how to apply for the Japanese driver`s license go to the following link on the JAF web site:
http://www.jaf.or.jp/e/switch.htm or If you have any questions I am available to assist. Call Mick Lay direct on 090-3805-7141 By the way the JAF 24 hour Road Side assistance is great! A list of JAF`s services and benifits can be found at
http://www.jaf.or.jp/e/eng00002.htm At about US$40 per year this is a must for all drivers. See JAF`s cost structure at http://www.jaf.or.jp/e/memship.htm Do they speak English? They usually have someone on hand who can converse.............. Have the following information ready before you call.....

Car   (1) Location of the disabled vehicle (route from prominent building or landmark, place name, address, etc.)
(2) Model and color of the vehicle and vehicle registration number
(3) Nature of trouble or request
(4) Whether you have a JAF membership card or not, and membership registration number if you have one.

Note: Members will be charged non-membership rates if they do not have their JAF membership card with them at the site of road service call.

Ask for JAF for emergency calls on the expressway Road service on the expressway, which had been operated exclusively by JAF, was deregulated in April 1997.
Following the entrance into the market of other road service providers, auto users now have to choose from among several providers when making a call from an emergency phone on the expressway.
Members are advised to ask for JAF on the phone as we JAF will continue to serve our members basically free of charge.
Members will not be entitled to JAF membership rates if they call road service providers other than JAF.
